Conference Biography (Long)

Charlie Love is a teacher and  developer with a strong history of curricular innovation and assessment.  He was a member of the ICT Excellence Group which convened to advise the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning on the future of ICT in learning and, in particular, the direction of Glow, Scotland’s National Intranet for Education. Charlie continues to provide advice to Scottish Government through the Technical and Operational Advisory Group as part of the Digital Learning and Teaching Programme.

He provides advice to Education Scotland and the Scottish Qualifications Authority on subject based curriculum issues and development, is a member of the SQAs Qualification Design Team for Computing Science and a member of a number of other SQA groups concerned with vocational education in Computing Science in the schools and FE sectors.  He has performed a number of national assessment roles such as a verifier for National Qualifications, National Certificate and Higher National courses for SQA and as an examiner for Higher Computing.

Charlie developed an online portal for education, called Glew, which links the best opensource and free tools, including Google Apps for Education, together using a standards based authentication system and continues the ongoing development of this service.

He is a member of the board of Computing At School (Scotland) and organises national support for computing science via the CompEdNet online discussion forum.  He was part of the Consolarium team at Learning and Teaching Scotland/Education Scotland, developing games based learning and games design to support Scotland’s learners and teachers.

He has written several books on Computing for Scottish Education, is a publisher of learning, teaching and assessment material and has contributed material for the SCHOLAR programme at Heriott-Watt University for Computing Science.

In his spare time he enjoys computer games, skateboarding and snowboarding.

Educational technologist, entrepreneur, author and developer, Love regularly blogs about technology and learning. He is a member of the Open Badges In Scottish Education Group which, in partnership with the Mozilla Foundation, is developing new approaches to recognising achievement and learning. He is a committee member of Computing At School Scotland (a partnership of teachers, IT industry and Further and Higher Education to promote computing science in schools) and also a member of the SQA Computing and IT Sector panel providing strategic advice and direction on future qualifications.

An advocated of flipped and blended models of learning, he has helped shape the future of Computing Science education in Scotland’s schools through his contributions to Curriculum for Excellence, as part of the SQA Qualification Design Team, and is currently involved in developing the assessment and structure of the new Higher and Advanced Higher courses. He is supporting mobile technology and the development of cloud based services for learning in Aberdeen City Council.”
